The following table contains figures for how much CO2 is produced from start to finish in the process of getting 1kg (2.2lb) of food from it’s source to your plate. For context, we have also provided the equivalent number of miles you would need to drive in a car to produce the same amount of CO2 emissions.

There are many contributing factors to the carbon footprint of the foods we eat. They begin at the source, the land used for production, and end with the processes involved with packaging and selling the final product. To take a closer look at where emissions are produced along the production and transportation chain, click the image below to enlarge it.

Equivalent kg of CO2 figures were taken from a 2018 study conducted by Joseph Poore and Thomas Nemecek (these figures and additional information can be found at Our World in Data).
Equivalent Car Miles were calculated using figures for average vehicle emissions provided by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
